![]() ![]() "The Way We Was" reflected The Simpsons' more down-to-earth sensibilities during its early years. "The Way We Was" was firmly planted in 1974 - the episode's pop culture references were specific, and Marge's protest that landed her in detention was inspired by the bra-burning protests of the time. But the show also operates on a sliding time scale, allowing for the same characters to remain static when they need to. The flashback formula in "The Way We Was" would be repeated many times on The Simpsons, to further success - and would also be used as the template to retcon Homer and Marge's first meeting. "The Way We Was" came when The Simpsons' Golden Age was fully setting in and established it as one of the premiere shows of the era. Both were sent to detention, albeit for very different reasons (Marge had gotten in trouble with the school administration for taking part in a feminist protest, while Homer was caught smoking cigarettes in the restroom alongside Barney Gumble). "The Way We Was" - directed by David Silverman and written by Al Jean, Mike Reiss and Sam Simon - was largely a flashback episode, with Homer and Marge telling their children the story of how they met in high school.
